In August 2023, Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42 uncovered three cyber attack campaigns orchestrated by the China-linked threat group Mustang Panda, with a focus on organizations in the South Pacific including the Philippines. This occurs amid heightened tensions in the South China Sea. 
The attacks utilized spear-phishing emails, delivering a malicious ZIP archive file through DLL side-loading. The compromise of a Philippines government entity took place over five days from August 10 to 15, 2023.
